21st Century COE of Flow Dynamics
F2004 International Internship Program
Achievement Report

Date: 01/12/04

My name is Stefano Pieri, I am a Ph.D. student of Energetic Department of University of Trieste. This was my first COE internship program. My accepting supervisor in Tohoku University has been Prof. Shigeru Obayashi and I have been there from 24/09/2004 to 23/11/2004.
During my staying I run the optimization of a sinusoidal duct in low Re conditions,

thermo-dynamically fully developed, using S.O.M. (self organizing map) to visualize the results and to choose the best solution.
I took part to several seminars, conferences and lectures, in particular to Flow Dynamics (First International Conference on Flow Dynamics) & AFI/TFI (Fourth Intenational Symposium on Advanced Fluid Information/First International Symposium on Transdisciplinary Fluid Integration) hold in Sendai International Center on November 11-12 2004.
During my permanence in Japan I could visit some wonderful places close to Sendai as Zao Mountain (Figure 1) and Matsushima (Figure 2) which is extraordinary in autumn.
Then I went to Tokyo and Kyoto for sightseeing. It's easy for foreigners to travel in Japan and moreover Japanese people are really kind and helpful. I found in Japan many good friends and wonderful collegues.
I think the internship program is a great opportunity for every student and it is run in an extraordinary way. I would like to recommend this experience to all students.
