21st Century COE of Flow Dynamics
F2004 International Internship Program
Achievement Report
Date: 01/12/04

I was fortunate enough to spend almost 3 months in Sendai as a guest at the Institute of Fluid Dynamics at Tohoku University. During that time I worked in the Maruyama-Maruta Heat Transfer Laboratory. The whole experience was fantastic. The research environment was very exciting with many well funded cutting edge projects being undertaken. The research group atmosphere is very social and everyone eats lunch and dinner together in some of the many restaurants near the university-I will miss the Soba noddles from the university cafeteria.
I was in Sendai between December and February when it is very cold-especially from someone from Sydney Australia! Sendai is very beautiful then though and I went skiing with two other people from the Laboratory.
While I was there I travelled to the nearby city of Shiogama after New Years when many Japanese people visit the famous temple there. I also visited Matsushima, a small town near by with a bay full of tiny islands said to be one of the most beautiful places in Japan.
Overall I was very glad to be given the opportunity to work on interesting research projects in such a well funded and supportive laboratory. Japan is a fascinating country very welcoming to visitors. Thankyou to all the people in the Laboratory and the COE staff for making my stay a success.
