DSL

The 7th International Conference on Diffusion on Solids and Liquids (DSL) was held in Algarve, Portugal from March 25th to March 30th 2011. I chose this conference because I thought that was the closest to my research field. As this conference my presentation title was "Evaluation of the Concentration Dependency of Mass Diffusion Coefficients in Aqueous Binary Solutions". My presentation was on the second day of the conference and it was supposed to be a 15-minute presentation and a 5-minute Q&As, but actually the discussion took about 10 minutes. This is unthinkable in Japan where the time between presentations is plus/minus 30 seconds. The first question I was asked was by a Canadian scientist. He asked me whether the measurement system I used was suitable for measurement of multicomponent systems. This was exactly what I worked on in my undergraduate research so I could answer in detail. The discussion then evolved to the limitations of the concentration range for the measurement of the diffusion coefficient. Later, a Russian doctor asked me whether the optical system in my research could be used to measure convective flows. This is actually what I have been researching on these days! So, until now the audience had asked me a couple of things that I didn't present but I had actually done myself. This made me feel as if I were a mature researcher. The last person to ask me was an Iranian professor, who later gave a rather a critical comment. He asked me about the "evaluation of the interaction" between to solution molecules. He said that what I did was more of an observation and discussion about the experimental results rather than an actual "evaluation". I think he is right. I will be more careful with the words and explanations I do from now on. The third day at the conference I attended to a presentation about the measurement of diffusion coefficients in multicomponent solutions by a Portuguese professor. At this presentation I asked a question for the first time at an international conference. The previous conference I attended last year in China was only poster session so I couldn't ask any questions at presentations. I asked the professor about the measurement of the cross-term at high concentrations. We had a lively discussion and exchanged contact for further collaboration. The presentation at the conference finalized at the third day, so I had one day to do sightseeing with Prof. Maruyama. The DSL organizers arranged a sightseeing trip from Vilamoura to the "End of the World" at Cape St. Vincent. It took 3 hours round trip! Apparently Cape St. Vincent was known to be the end of the world by Europeans since it was the most western point of this continent (of course, by then they hadn't discovered the country I was born, Colombia). By the way, I was amazed how Portuguese and Spanish languages are alike. I could talk in Spanish to most of the locals and understand what they were saying in about 80%. This time was for a conference, but I would love to visit this region of Portugal again. But most of all, I would like to continue having contact with the people I met there. Hopefully we could do some collaborative research in the future.
