Farewell Party

More than a month and a half had passed since the biggest earthquake on Japanese Record. The farewell party for the graduates of last scholar year was cancelled for obvious reasons, so here we were on May 3rd 2011 at a Parco izakaya (Japanese Restaurant-Bar) ready to celebrate with the members that were in Sendai during the holidays. This, for many of us, was the first time we actually go drinking in Sendai after March 11th. This year, Watanabe and Mashimo had graduated from Tohoku University and started to work in Japanese companies. In the two years we shared our student lifes here at Maruyama-lab we had become very good friends. With Watanabe I talked a whole bunch of personal stuff, and with Mashimo I played StarCraft2 (a computer game) a lot. During my first year as a master student I had the great chance of going to a research trip in the Mariana Trench with Watanabe. This was the second month we had met and we have been very good friends since then. With Mashimo I started "interacting" a lot after I introduced him StarCraft2. We played during the weekends most of the second master year until late at night. We had very lively discussions during the lunch break about StarCraft while all other lab-members looked at us with "no clue" expression on their faces. Mashimo did a pretty good job as a StarCraft2 player. He went from silver (the lowest rank) to platinum (the highest one) surpassing me in less than a year! That was amazing. The two years I shared with these two very nice friends was awesome. Of course, after having a lot of hard time together doing research we got to know each other a lot. I will surely miss them. I think that Japan needs more than ever hard working and clever people like them. I wish they do a great job in the companies they chose to work at. Meanwhile, Gonome and me will do are best as PhD students in our research here at Maruyama-lab!
