1. Overview

Biofluid systems, such as the blood circulation in human body, are typical intelligent fluid systems characterized by their sophisticated control mechanisms. The flow states are optimized for the dynamically changing conditions of living body and environment. Our laboratory deals with complex flow problems due to interaction between blood flow and vessel deformation and flows in microcirculation focusing on their control mechanism. Understanding biofluid systems is essential not only in medical problems but also in engineering applications to develop intelligent fluid systems.

2. Present Research Activity

Modeling of Blood Flow in Pressure Measurement

The stethoscopy using the Korotkoff sounds is widely used as the indirect measurement of blood pressure. We perform the numerical analysis with the simplified mathematical model for the circulation of blood in the arm. The mechanism of Korotkoff sounds generation is also investigated.

Simulation of blood pressure measurement

Blood Flow Modeling in Fine Capillaries

The blood flow model in fine capillaries is investigated considering the deformation of red blood cells. The blood flow characteristics and the mass transfer between blood cells and surrounding tissues are also studied.

Computer simulation of red blood cell in fine capillary

Feedback Control of Flow Field

Feedback control system is studied for the flow field around an automobile with suction and blowing to control vortex structure resulting in the reduction of drag.

Drag reduction with feedback control of flow

Integration of CFD and Experimental Measurement in Flow Problems

Integration of CFD and experimental measurement is investigated to develop a new analysis methodology applicable for complex flow problems.
