What is stent?

Stent is a net-like tube made of metal. It is widely used for expanding the vessel in the stenosis treatment. Stenting research in the stenosis treatment has long been conducted; the drug-eluting stent to prevent restenosis has been developed.

The application of stent to cerebral aneurysm

We have taken attention to stent as a safe and less-invasive implant, and we have applied it to the cerebral aneurysm treatment. Specifically, stent is placed at the entrance of aneurysm to block the blood flow and to decrease the blood velocity in the aneurysm.

However, the history of this treatment is short and it has not been proved that which material or which shape of a stent is appropriate for the cerebral aneurysm. Plus, it has not been clear which position of a stent works best for the aneurysm. There are also other problems in stenting. For example, the stent in the vessel stirs after the surgery, and the stent itself damages the vessel.

In our laboratory

We are trying to solve these stent-related problems. To this end, we are now conducting the experiment of the intracranial stent in combination with the computer simulation using the real-shaped 3D stent image. Through these trials,we analyze the blood flow with high accuracy. We also offer the stent design to decrease the blood flow effectively.
