Currently, the movement toward the use of ammonia as a fuel is accelerating. Represented by the formula NH3, ammonia does not contain carbon, which means it does not emit carbon dioxide when combusted like hydrogen. Moreover, since ammonia liquifies at a relatively low pressure, about the same as propane, it can easily be transported and stored. However, it has the disadvantage of not being highly flammable and is at risk of emitting nitrogen oxides during combustion. In addition, ammonia itself is a deleterious substance, requiring careful handling. Some materials corrode with ammonia. In order to move towards a decarbonized society, research to overcome the challenges of using ammonia as a carbon-free fuel are accelerating worldwide.
