演題: 「MAGNETIC- AND ELECTRIC FIELD RESPONSIVE SOFT MATERIALS 」

In the last few years we have observed a migration of interest and activity from the traditional hard materials towards soft areas such as biomaterials, self assembly materials, complex fluids and polymer gels. It has been recognised that no other class of smart materials can be made to respond to so many different stimuli like polymer gels. The triggering stimuli include temperature, solvent composition, specific molecules, pH, ionic composition, light, electric and magnetic fields. The response to these stimuli can also be diverse, including significant changes in swelling-, mechanical-, optical- and transport properties. Several important developments have been made in the field of smart polymer gels during the last decades. Colloidal particles with special electric and magnetic properties can be built into polymer gels or elastomers. These particles couple the shape of the soft material to the external field. Shape distortion occurs instantaneously and disappears abruptly when external field is applied or removed, respectively. This abrupt shape transition can be applicable to a variety of fields as a new driving mechanism and can be exploited to construct new type of soft actuators, valves, colloidal motors as well as vehicles for controlled drug delivery. Deformation induced by magnetic and electric field, temporary reinforcement due to magnetic interactions as well as on/off switching control of magnetic polymeric membranes will be the main subject of the presentation.
