Opportunities for Students Exchange
at Tohoku University

Profile of Tohoku University
Tohoku University was established in Sendai
in 1907 as Tohoku Imperial University, the
third institution of that kind after Tokyo
and Kyoto Universities. Over 90 years since
its foundation Tohoku University has developed
into one of the most distinguished universities
in the country.
It was the first Imperial University to admit women and foreign students. The university was quick to open its door to students from foreign countries. Already in 1911 Tohoku University graduated its first foreign students (one from India and one from China), thus becoming the Japanese university with the longest history of foreign graduates.
The "Spirit of Open Doors" remains alive within the tradition of Tohoku University. The enrollment of international students has steadily increased, and now Tohoku University is widely known as an institution providing extensive opportunities to international applicants. As of May 2001, there were 865 international students from 68 countries studying at Tohoku University.
Junior Year Program in English
Junior Year Program gives overseas students
an opportunity to take science, engineering
and education courses at Tohoku University
without having to learn the Japanese language.
This program also offers courses on Japanese
language, culture and society aimed at promotion
of understanding of Japan's language and
social customs.
The one-year program begins on October 1. It is divided into two semesters:
First semester: October 1 - March 31
Second semester: April 1 - September 30
There are vacations in summer, winter and spring. Each semester consists of 15 weeks of class work.
Students are required to take a total of 13 credits or more including 5 credits given for their faculty's Individual Research Training program each semester. Two credits are given for most of the lecture courses that meet once a week for 90 minutes. The Japanese language classes meet twice a week and 4 credits are given for 60 classes.
Application for Admission
The applicant must satisfy the following conditions
to be eligible for enrollment in this program:
1)The applicant must be enrolled in his/her home institution as a regular third or fourth year student
2)The home institution must have a formal agreement on student exchange with Tohoku University
Students are eligible for a waiver of tuition fees, but should bear the cost of leaving. In fact they can apply for the scholarship, provided by the Japanese Government through the Association of International Education, which includes an allowance of 80,000 yens/month, a round-trip economy class air ticket and a one-time grant of 25,000 yens.
The Tohoku University International House is available for the stay of participants in this program at the rate of about 5,000 yens/month plus expenses for utilities (10,000 yens/month).
Students from Russia Studying at Tohoku University
As of May 2001 there were 5 Russian students
studying at Tohoku University: two at the
Faculty of Engineering, one at the Law Faculty,
one at the Economics Faculty and one in the
Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for
Advanced Materials. But by now no Russian
students took part in the Tohoku University
Junior Year Program. For the academic year
of 2002-2003 two students from the Moscow
State University were chosen by Tohoku University
to be admitted to the program. Both of them,
a boy and a girl, are forth year students,
studying at the Faculty of Physics.
The enrollment of the Moscow State University students to Junior Year Program is one of the steps, made within the Liaison Office in elaboration of collaboration of two institutions.
