About Tohoku University

Tohoku University was founded in Sendai in 1907 as Tohoku Imperial University. It was the third Imperial University in Japan. At first it consisted of two faculties: College of Agriculture and College of Science. Later the university was joined by the Faculty of Medicine and the School of Engineering (in 1919), the Faculty of Law and Literature (in1922), the Faculty of Agriculture (in 1947) and othe faculties and schools. Today Tohoku University is one of the largest as well as the oldest universities in Japan, comprising 10 faculties (Faculty of Arts and Letters, Faculty of Education, School of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Science, School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Engineering and Faculty of Agriculture), 13 Graduate Schools (including 3 graduate schools with no respective faculties - Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, Graduate School of Information Sciences and Graduate School of Life Sciences), 5 research institutes (Institute for Materials Research, Institute for Development, Aging and Cancer, Institute of Fluid Science, Research Institute of Electrical Communication and Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials) and many other educational and research centers and facilities.

Since its foundation, the University has been very progressive: it was the first Imperial University to admit applicants who had not finished regular preparatory courses, the first to introduce coeducation in Japanese universities, , presented university extension lecture to the public ahead of its time. Tohoku University conferred its degrees on foreign graduates as back as 1911, earlier then the oldest university in Japan - University of Tokyo.

Following its "Open-door" spirit, the University has cherished as its fundamental ideal a "Search-for-Truth" spirit, which may be rephrased as the "Research First" principle. This doesn't mean exclusive stress on research at the expense of education; it means that where there is good research, there is good education.

The "University Autonomy" spirit that has defended academic freedom in spite of many obstacles on its path is also one of the characteristics of Tohoku University.

The University staff consists of the president, professors, associate professors, lectures, research associates, and administrative and technical officials. The University has a University council, faculty meetings, institute boards and many other consultative organs.
