About Moscow State University
The Lomonosov Moscow State University is
the oldest university of Russia
Moscow University, the first university
in Russia was founded on the 25th of January,
1755 at the decree of Russian empress Elizaveta.
This day is still celebrated in Russia as
"Students' day". But the real initiator
of the establishment of the university was
Michail Lomonosov, the great Russian scientist.
He was the one who worked out the structure,
the aims and the forms of education and research,
conducted in the university. That is why
the university is called in his honour.
At first there were only three faculties:
Philosophy, Law and Medicine. The lecturing
was conducted in two languages: Latin
and
Russian. There were only ten professors,
and the number of students didn't exceed
30. Currently Moscow State University
(MSU)
is not only the oldest, but also the
largest
educational institution in Russia:
the staff
of professors, teachers and researchers
is
about 8500, 6900 of whom hold Doctor
of Science
and PhD degrees; the total number of
students
is more than 30000. The number of foreign
students is more then 3000 from 97
countries
and this number is growing constantly.
Moscow State University provides a
wide range
of educational services and programs.
The
educational system of the university
is designed
to give a student a deep understanding
of
fundamental disciplines combined with
specialization
in applied and concrete scientific
problems.
There are 21 faculties in MSU:
Mechanics and Mathematics,
Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics,
Physics,
Chemistry,
Geology,
Biology,
Geography,
Soil Science,
Basic Medicine,
History,
Philology,
Philosophy,
Foreign Languages,
Economics,
Journalism,
Law,
Psychology,
Sociology,
Institute of Asian and African Studies,
Institute of Public Administration
and Social
Studies,
Higher College of Materials Science.
Investigations and training are two
coherent
parts of the educational process, provided
by the faculties' departments and 17
research
institutes and centers. MSU is a recognized
scientific research center of Russia.
Its
research staff is about 4600 persons,
including
580 Doctor of Science and 2945 PhD
degrees
holders. More then 50% of researches
are
involved in teaching.
Moscow State University has a special
status
in the Russian Federation. It is a
self-governing
university. Its Statute is developed
and
confirmed by the Scientific Council
of the
University.
