Education

The School of Engineering at Tohoku University assigns students in their junior year to a research lab with the aim of getting them in direct contact with research as early as possible. Our educational program for the two juniors and three master's students at Samukawa Lab consists of two weekly seminars and a technical discussion meeting once every two weeks.
One weekly seminar is based on Lieberman's Principles of Plasma Discharges and Materials Processing ; the other focuses on the basics of spectroscopy. At our technical discussions, participants introduce their research themes and papers, and we focus on how to make presentations and how to build up discussions and research strategies. Each participant is also required to submit weekly reports with the aim of nurturing their ability to sum up and record their work. From time to time, we also organize special lectures given by outside researchers so that the students have contact with the very latest research being done.
