March 30th, 2002 No.3
The visit of the Japanese scientists to
Moscow State University
In March of 2002 the Moscow State University
was visited by four Japanese scientists:
Prof. Mitsuhiro Motokawa, Dr. Tetsuya Uchimoto,
Dr. Yun Luo, and Mr. Takeshi Okuyama. The
aim of these visits was to enlarge collaboration
between Tohoku University and Moscow State
University and to make the operation of the
Liaison Office more effective. The scientists
met with their Russian colleagues and found
new interesting themes for future joint projects.

Dr. Y. Luo came to Moscow on February 27
and stayed there until March 10. During
his
visit he got acknowledged with the
work of
the Low-Temperature Physics department
of
the Faculty of Physics and met with
a number
of researchers of the Moscow State
University.
Prof. Kulbachinskiy and Prof. Skipetrov
from
the Low-Temperature Physics department
gave
Dr. Luo some of their published papers
to
be passed to their Japanese colleagues,
forming
a base for future joint works.
Dr. Luo also improved the computer
base of
the Liaison Office, installed the necessary
software and made it possible to communicate
with Sendai in Japanese.

Prof. M. Motokawa, Institute of Material
Research, Tohoku University, stayed in Moscow
from March 13 to March 17. He met with the
dean of the Faculty of Physics Prof. V. Trukhin,
where they discussed the program of the coming
visit to Moscow State University of the President
of Tohoku University Prof. H. Abe. The preliminary
program of the President's visit has been
worked out and agreed by both parties. Prof. Motokawa and Prof. Vasiliev launched
a new joint project: the investigation
of
the physical characteristics of transition
metal format compounds. Prof. Motokawa
offered
a model that explains an uncommon physical
phenomenon in tis class of materials
- magnetisation
reversal and magnetic memory effect
at low
temperatures. The experimental data
for this
investigation was obtained by Prof.
Vasiliev
during his stay in Tokyo University
as a
guest professor.

From March 15 to March 29 the Moscow State
University was visited by lecturer
Dr. T.
Uchimoto and a post-graduate student
of Prof.
T. Takagi Mr. T. Okuyama. These researchers
met with several scientists of the
Faculty
of Physics (Prof. V. Shukhaev, Prof.
V. Kulbachinskiy)
and a number of scientists from the
other
institutes of Moscow. They visited
the Institute
of High Temperatures of the Academy
of Science
of Russia where they acquainted with
the
works on non-destructive testing. They
were
also invited to the Khrunichev aerospace
factory to see the usage of systems
of non-destructive
testing, to Moscow Institute of Aviation
Technology, where they were met by
Prof.
V. Zotov, and to Moscow Institute of
Power
Engineering, where they were invited
by Prof. V. Lunin.
Dr. T. Uchimoto and Mr. T. Okuyama
took part
in the investigation of the formats
of transition
metals and created a mathematic model
for
calculation of magnetisation of nickel-formate
dehydrate at the Low-Temperature Physics
department. Mr. Okuyama also assimilated
methods of investigating thermal capacity
of solids at wide temperature range;
and
in cooperation with Ms. T. Voloshok
conducted
investigation of manganites, which
exhibit
colossal magnitoresistance. Monocrystaline
sample of this compound was prepared
in Iwate
University, Morioka, Japan.
During their stay in Moscow Dr. T.
Uchimoto
and Mr. T. Okuyama visited a scientific
seminar
on the problem of low-dimensional magnetism,
read by Prof. A. Vasiliev in Institute
of
Physics Problems of Academy of Science
of
Russia.
They also improved the computer base
of the
Liaison office, setting an internal
network
there.

On holidays all the Japanese guests
were
offered cultural program, including
Moscow
sightseeing and visiting famous places
of
Moscow region. They had a possibility
to
enjoy Kremlin and its churches, the
Red Square,
famous Russian art galleries (the Pushkin
Fine Art Museum, the Tretiakov gallery),
the circus and the Bolshoi Theatre.
Together
with Prof. Vasiliev they visited Sergiev
Posad and Gjel: small Russian towns,
famous
for their beautiful sights and handicrafts.
Owing to the visit of Prof. M. Motokawa,
Dr. T. Uchimoto, Dr. Y. Luo, and Mr.
T. Okuyama
the collaboration between Tohoku University
and Moscow State University became
more concrete;
it also formed a base for formulation
and
development of the new joint projects.
