Start of the second phase of the joint laboratory with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) -MOU renewal online signing ceremony-

On December 20, 2021 (Mon), an online signing ceremony for the renewal of the joint laboratory MOU between National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) and Tohoku University was held. At the signing ceremony, the presidents of the two universities signed an agreement in a friendly atmosphere with President Hideo Ohno, Executive Vice President Motoko Kotani (in charge of research), Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki, (in charge of general affairs, finance and international development), and Professor Seiji Samukawa (Deputy Laboratory Director of the International Joint Laboratory) from Tohoku University and President Chi-Hung Lin, Vice President Jenn-Hwan Tarng, Vice President Po-Tsun Liu (in charge of research), and Vice President Kuan-Neng Chen (in charge of international exchange) from NYCU in attendance.

After the signing ceremony, Professor Yiming Li from NYCU, who also serves as the Deputy Laboratory Director of the international joint laboratory and Professor Samukawa from Tohoku University coordinated to host the second phase kick-off workshop.

At the workshop, following an address by Provost Ta-Sung Lee (Vice President) from NYCU and Executive Vice President Kotani from Tohoku University, Professor Kaoru Maruta, Director of the Institute of Fluid Science, gave a keynote speech on strengthening co-creation between the two universities, and Professor Kai-Ten Feng, Associate Dean of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NYCU, gave a keynote speech on designing for Beyond 5G networks.

In addition, the results of the first phase of the joint laboratory on semiconductors, hydrogen Energy, and biomedical sensor networks and the activity plan for the second phase were reported by each of the group leaders and laboratory members from the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Japan) and the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (Taiwan), and Professor Guang Hong from the Graduate School of Dentistry at Tohoku University and Professor Ming-Lun Hsu from NYCU gave an introduction on the new theme of digital dentistry in the new normal society in the second phase of the joint laboratory.

In the future, based on the new cooperative relationship between the two universities, we will develop joint research in the fields of advanced semiconductor technology and medical ICT, aiming at digital transformation, which is becoming increasingly important during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the promotion of international industry-academia collaboration activities for the revival of Japanese semiconductors, which will serve as the foundation for this revival, is expected.
