IFS Environment and Energy Cluster Seminar “Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Fire Disasters: Is Japan Prepared?” (March 19, 2026)

WUI fires are increasing worldwide, and firebrand showers are a major cause of home ignition and community destruction. In 2024, ISO published the first international standard for generating firebrands in laboratory settings.
This lecture introduces the firebrand problem, outlines the development process of the ISO firebrand generator, presents recent experiments on Japanese vegetation from the Ofunato WUI fires, and discusses whether Japan is prepared for future disasters.
