CNRS President and CEO Antoine Petit and Delegation Visit Tohoku University

On Friday, June 20, 2025, a delegation led by Prof. Antoine Petit, President and CEO of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), visited Tohoku University. Following a meeting and luncheon with President Teiji Tominaga and other university officials, the delegation participated in a campus tour that included a visit to the Institute of Fluid Science (IFS).

At the Institute of Fluid Science, Director Kaoru Maruta provided an overview of the institute, and Professor Hideaki Kobayashi on research related to ammonia combustion. The delegation then visited the relevant experimental facility.

This visit by the CNRS President and CEO highlights the long-standing importance of the collaborative relationship between Tohoku University and CNRS. For the past two decades, the Institute of Fluid Science and the Graduate School of Engineering have been deepening their research collaboration in materials science and combustion through research programs jointly promoted by both Japanese and French institutions, exemplified by the ELyT program. This has been a highly anticipated event for all parties involved.

Moving forward, we look forward to the further development of the international joint research project “HYCOMBS (Hydrogen and Ammonia Combustion in Singapore),” which utilizes the Singapore government’s international collaborative research center CREATE—the only overseas office established by CNRS in 2019. We also hope for the opportunity to launch new large-scale collaborative projects in areas of shared strength, including combustion, materials, disaster science, and advanced medical care.
