The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) released the 6th Edition of the SFPE Handbook of Fire Protection Engineering on July 15, 2026. Samuel L. Manzello, Visiting Professor at the Institute of Fluid Science, Tohoku University, was invited by SFPE to serve as a Section Editor for the newly established section, “Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Fires and Environmental Impacts,” and contributed to its development.

Since its first edition was published in 1988, the SFPE Handbook has become an important reference for fire safety engineers, researchers, code officials, and students. The 6th Edition introduces seven new chapters on WUI fires as part of the new section.

The inclusion of a dedicated section on WUI fires represents an important development in addressing this growing global challenge.
