President of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Visits the Institute of Fluid Science

On June 5 (Mon), President Chi-Hung Lin and others of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University visited the Institute of Fluid Science on the occasion of the MOU signing ceremony with Tohoku University and the Joint Laboratory Workshop. First, Professor Kaoru Maruta, Director of the Institute of Fluid Science, gave an overview of the institute, followed by explanations on ammonia combustion by Professor Hideaki Kobayashi and Associate Professor Akihiro Hayakawa. During the explanation, there were active questions from start to finish, indicating the high level of interest of those involved. The group was then briefed on the supercomputer by Associate Professor Gota Kikugawa, and enjoyed an immersive experience in a large 3D space with projected turbulence at Haneda Airport and molecular dynamics simulations.

The MOU signing ceremony was moderated by Vice President Masahiro Yamaguchi and was successfully carried out in a friendly atmosphere in the presence of President Hideo Ohno, President Chi-Hung Lin of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), Executive Vice President Motoko Kotani, Executive Vice President Toshiya Ueki, Advisor to the President Keiichi Sasaki, Senior Vice President Jenn-Hwan Tarng of NCYU, Senior Vice President Chien Chou, and other executive officers from both universities.

At the joint workshop opening plenary session chaired by Director Maruta of the Institute of Fluid Science, Executive Vice President Motoko Kotani, Senior Vice President Jenn-Hwan Tarng, and Executive Vice President Takuro Ueda gave greetings and keynote speeches, introducing both universities and explaining their future activity plans, filling Katahira Sakura Hall to full capacity.

The workshop included sessions on specialized fields (Social Science and Electrical Engineering, DX in Healthcare and Educational Setting), with Professor Seiji Samukawa of NYCU, Professor Kazuhiko Endo of Tohoku University and Professor Allen Ming-Lun Hsu of NYCU and Professor Hong Guang of Tohoku University serving as moderators for each session, and presentations from both universities on a wide range of research areas including semiconductor, social science, disaster risk reduction, dental education and DX, cloud-based cancer genomics and blood flow simulation, followed by a lively Q&A session.

Before and after the workshop, the delegation visited the Tohoku University Hospital (Dean Naoto Ishii), the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (Director Shinichi Kuriyama), NanoTerasu (President Masaki Takata), and the Tohoku University Museum (Associate Professor Satoshi Kato), where they deepened their exchanges through Q&A sessions with experts in their respective fields.

In the future, a wide range of activities, including co-creation and human resource exchanges, are expected based on comprehensive university-wide collaborations that go beyond the framework of the existing joint laboratories.
